With fascinating and unique landscapes, Ladakh in North India is home
to many beautiful high peaks of the Himalayas. This region is an
impeccable and the most desirable place to visit which has high
mountains going beyond 7000 m altitude. It has mesmerizing barren land
and snow-capped mountains which are still less explored by people.
From Zanskar to Karakoram Himalayan range, there are many famous
peaks in this region that can and cannot be scaled. Here, most of the
peaks require special permissions from the home ministry of India or
from the mountaineering federation. These are quite challenging and
located near disrupted region but still, there are many which can be
scaled easily. It can be someone’s first attempt at trekking where a
person can experience 6000 m plus peak with challenges but less
technical ones.
Here are some top and famous peaks from Ladakh:
Mount Nun: The
famous majestic mountain massif of Mount Nun- Kun where the higher one,
Mount Nun (7135 m) is the most admired mountain but difficult to scale.
It is located on borderline (LOC) in the Indian Territory of Suru
Valley in the Kargil district. Because of technicality and risk, this
peak is climbed by very few people.
Mount Kun:
The second highest of the mountain massif Mount Nun-Kun, Mount Kun has
an elevation of 7087 m. This climbing expedition located in Suru Valley,
right next to Mount Nun. These mountains may look nearer visually but
have completely different routes to trek including different base camps.
This trek is quite challenging but do-able. People prefer doing this
expedition post-monsoon for better and clearer weather.
Mount Pinnacle:
In this group of Nun-Kun mountain Massif, the third-highest peak is Mt
Pinnacle with an elevation of 6930 meters. The route and technicalities
are the same as for Mount Kun. It is better to attempt this expedition
in early summers than later as the snow is less harsh to walk.
Mount Kang Yatze I & II:
Located in Hemis National Park in Markha Valley, the twin summit peak
of Mt Kang Yatze I (6496 m) & Mt Kang Yatze II (6270 m) is a
captivating trek of two peaks. Usually, trekkers choose to climb Kang
Yatze II more than Kang Yatze I as the higher ones in the east is
comparatively difficult to scale because of edgy traverses
Mount Mentok Kangri I, II & III: This beautiful massif of three summits of Mt Mentok Kangri
(6250 m, 6150 m & 6210 m) overlooks mesmerizing Tso Moriri in the
remote area of Rupsu valley. The routes here are quite tough but with
standard technical knowledge of fixing ropes and balancing on snow
slopes.
Mount Stok Kangri: With a magnificent view of
Zanskar and Indus valley, Mount Stok Kangri (6153 m) is one of the most
attractive treks for adventure lovers. It lies in Hemis National Park
with a trailhead in a remote village Stok.
NOTE:- Mount Stok Kangri peak is temporarily closed for trekking and climbing from 2020 by related government authorities
Mount Dzo Jongo: Markha Valley is home to this beautiful twin summit peak, Mount Dzo Jongo (6218 m)
which quite near to Kang Yatse peaks. This climbing expedition is quite
less technical than the near ones but tough as the trail is steep.
Chamster Kangri & Lamster Kangri: The
panoramic view of Tso Moriri Lake from this twin summit peak, Chamster
Kangri (6620 m) & Lamster Kangri (6660 m) is a perfect visual treat
to adventure lovers. These are among the most popular Kangri peaks of
this region. It is often preferred by trekkers in the months of June,
July and August. Both the summits share the same base camps
Matho Kangri: One
of the quite new popular peaks, Matho Kangri is located in Zanskar
Valley and named after its nearby village Matho. It has an elevation of
approx 6000 m which is quite challenging to scale but the picturesque
view will definitely heal all. The trek starts from the famous Hemis
Monastery region which is usually considered to start in the months of
July, August, and September.
Ladakh has a never-ending list of alluring peaks but as mentioned
only some are scalable and have fewer formalities from the authorities.
Below are some famous peaks which lie in the fascinating region of
Siachen. These peaks are known to be the highest in the region but need
special permissions from the government of India: –
Mount Trishul expedition:-
The picturesque landscape of the Gharwal region is home to many famous
Himalayan peaks that attracted many mountaineers over the years and
Mount Trishul is one of them. Standing high with an altitude of 7120 m,
Trishul is a group of three peaks, Trishul I, Trishul II, and Trishul III run
north to south where Trishul I is the highest with 7120 m, then 6690 m
and 6007 m respectively. These three peaks together form the shape of a
trident that is why it is named after the trident/Trishul of Lord Shiva
in Hindi.
Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the climbing
expedition to Mt Trishul is quite tough that needs technical skill and
knowledge but breathtakingly beautiful. Every year many trekking
enthusiasts attempt to climb this peak. All of them have prior
experiences of 6000 m and above peaks. Usually, people consider July,
August, and September as the best time period to trek on this route. But
during that time also prefer to check the weather forecast in advance
as the heart-warming view from the summit should not be missed.
The trek to this alluring peak starts from Sutol village which can be
reached via car/taxi from Rishikesh. If your trek is booked with
Shikhar Travels then the itinerary will include every transport and stay
right from the arrival in Delhi till the departure. The initial 5 days
trek will be targeted to reach the base camp passing Tatara village,
Latakopri, and Homkund. These places will have pre-set Shikhar camps by
the team of overnight stays along with the meals.
The trek to Mount Trishul Peak
is a favorite among nature lovers as the trek passes through beautiful
meadows that are surrounded by high snow-covered mountains. There will
be water streams to cross and majorly there will be possible chances of
witnessing unique Himalayan wildlife especially musk deer. It is a
fascinating experience that one can ever have.
After reaching base camp at Homkund, trekkers prefer to keep days for
acclimatization as it is the most important thing to do. Here team
leaders usually add small hikes to nearby high places and some technical
practices like using tools or guiding of emergency situations. The
trail goes from tough to tougher as the ascending trail shifts from the
loose rocky surface to the glacier to the snow trail which is quite
difficult to walk. These coming days after the acclimatization, the
group will move forward to the ABC (Advanced Base Camp) then gradually
further to Camp 1 site setting up the ropes and moping the direction and
likewise for camp 2.
Finally, the day comes for the last climb to the summit for the
height of 7120 m. The trail might look easy slope to climb but it’s not,
rather it is much tiring as one needs to conserve energy while moving
up. The air is pretty cold and strong here and clouds keep moving
around. Here you can see the spectacular view of Himalayan ranges where
most of them will be at a lower altitude than yours. With the help of
ropes, anchors, and crampons you’ll move ahead from the west ridge. The
wind here is so strong that it carries snow with it as it does during
storms. But, lastly reaching at the top of the summit will give immense
satisfaction. Peaks like Nanda Ghunti, Mrigthuni, and a wide range of
Himalayas offer an impeccable view from this height.
After this successful attempt, it will be time to head back to the
camps. Gradually with proper rest, the group will head to camps then
over the days to ABC and then base camp. As ascend on this trail is
difficult to descend is also equally difficult. But once you reach base
camp then reaching Latakopri and Sutol Village will be easy and less
time-consuming. The transport at the village will be arranged by Shikhar Travels which will further take you to your departure destination.

Mount Chandra Bhaga 13 is the most iconic expedition in an
adventurer’s life which overlooks the most beautiful Spiti Valley in
Himachal Pradesh. The whole trek is of rocky boulders and rough terrain
which is quite tough to walk along with icy Dhaka Glacier to pass from.
The trek is full of past stories and spectacular views of Kunzum Range
and a distant view of Chandartaal Lake. one can prepare himself to climb
the twin summit. The terrain is rouged, a couple of technical boulders
on your and the steep summit makes CB 13 and CB 14 a bit on the difficult side.
